Collage

Collage has always been one of my favorite mediums. Beginning around 2017, I began making these digital collages out of archival found material, usually paintings and photographs from the early 20th century and earlier. I love bringing these antique images, with their associations with a Eurocentric art historical canon, into a modern, surreal context. I tend to gravitate towards subject matter involving nature, the body, and human superstitions. I make these images in Photoshop by painstakingly cutting out each element and adjusting each layer to create a unified final piece. In some pieces, I aim to blend each element seamlessly; in others, I embrace the harsher, "pasted together" aesthetic of traditional collage. Occasionally I'll paint additional assets by hand in Procreate.
